Our Story
A Letter From Our Founder, Pallavi
Dear Parents & Educators,
Tinker Lab began in October 2020 during a time of global uncertainty. It emerged from a deeply felt need—not just for schooling, but for a more human, responsive kind of early childhood education. One that prioritises children’s emotional well-being, natural curiosity, and independence. What started as a small, home-based micro-school has since grown into a vibrant, play-based preschool in Gurgaon, reimagining what learning in the early years can look like. Today, Tinker Lab is known among families across Gurgaon and Delhi NCR as one of the most trusted, child-led learning environments for young children.
Why I Started Tinker Lab
As a mother and educator, I often found myself deeply unsettled by the disconnect between what we know about children—and how we treat them in most early learning environments. I was shaped by the philosophies of RIE (Resources for Infant Educarers) and Self-Regulation, both of which helped me see children as competent, creative, and deserving of deep respect. These approaches challenged me to slow down, to observe more than instruct, and to treat children not as problems to manage—but as people to understand. And yet, in so many classrooms, children are rushed into academics. They’re expected to trace letters, follow routines, and prepare for school performance—long before they’re emotionally or developmentally ready. But why? Why are we asking children to sit still before they’ve even learned how to express big feelings? Why are we measuring their success in worksheets, when we know that children who lack the emotional intelligence (EQ) to navigate real-life challenges will struggle no matter how many facts they know? Why do so many classrooms still reward obedience over confidence, compliance over connection?
Children aren’t built for compliance —they’re built for curiosity.
A Different Kind of Learning Environment
Tinker Lab was my answer to those questions. A space where children are not just seen—but heard. Where learning begins with trust, presence, and respect. Where children grow not by being managed, but by being understood. We believe children are natural explorers. Curious by nature, capable by design. We believe that learning doesn’t emerge from silence—it grows through play, through relationships, and through deep connection to the world around them.
What Sets Tinker Lab Apart
Our RIE (Resources for Infant Educarers) inspired approach guides how we design our spaces, interact with children, and collaborate with families. It reminds us daily that education is not just about getting ready for school—it’s about preparing children for life. At Tinker Lab, we:
- Honour each child’s individuality—there is no one-size-fits-all approach
- Blend structure and freedom—where child-led learning meets thoughtful planning
- Prioritise emotional and social development—as essential as literacy or numeracy
- Empower children to lead their learning—asking questions, taking risks, and making meaning
Our mission is to create emotionally nurturing and intellectually stimulating environments where children are not shaped into students, but nurtured into authentic, self-assured, emotionally resilient individuals—prepared not just to pass tests, but to face the world with empathy and strength. Whether you’re exploring the idea of a play-based preschool in Gurgaon, or simply looking for a space where your child’s voice is valued, I hope you find in Tinker Lab more than a curriculum. I hope you find a philosophy—built on respect, reflection, and possibility.
With much love & hope for our children,
Pallavi Poojari Mohindra
