Introducing The Tinker Times: Why I’m Adding Another Voice
In a world flooded with advice for parents and educators—where social media is filled with posts, influencers, and quick-fix tips on how to "get it right"—you may be wondering: Why add another voice? Why write this series? Why The Tinker Times?
The answer is simple: because this isn’t about quick fixes or raising compliant children. The Tinker Times is about something deeper—about helping children grow into authentic, reflective individuals who are not just ready for school, but ready for life.
I’ve spent years immersed in the world of early childhood development, through my own journey as a mother and as an educator at Tinker Lab. And over time, I realized something crucial: many of the voices out there focus on outcomes—how to get your child to behave, how to prepare them for school, how to ensure they hit the "right" milestones. But there’s something missing in this conversation.
I want to shift the focus from what adults believe children should accomplish to who children can become if we facilitate and support by first understanding who they are.
In The Tinker Times, we’ll reflect on what it means to raise thinkers, not just followers. We’ll explore how we can nurture a child’s natural curiosity and spirit instead of taming it. We’ll delve into the importance of play, emotional development, and what it takes to build a foundation for lifelong learning—because raising a child isn’t about checking boxes, it’s about cultivating an environment where children can discover themselves.
Why Add to the Noise?
I know there’s a lot of noise out there. But The Tinker Times isn’t here to give you more to do; it’s here to offer space to reflect. My hope is that each piece will prompt you to think more deeply, to pause, and to ask, "Why am I doing this? How can I do it differently? How can I raise a child who is truly prepared for the challenges of life?"
This is about thoughtful reflection, not just more advice. It’s about creating meaningful change in how we approach childhood, and by extension, how we shape the future.
As we dive into this series, my goal is to help you find clarity in the chaos, and give you the tools not to raise a child who simply follows the herd, but one who carves their own path—someone who thinks, questions, and grows into the fullness of who they’re meant to be.
This isn’t about quick fixes or following trends. It’s about the long game.
Welcome to The Tinker Times. Let’s rethink childhood together.
